Making your Home ‘Smart’

Smart homes are on the rise and the availability and affordability of products to help you turn your own home in to one has been steadily on the rise over the last few years.

Imagine coming home after going out for a nice dinner, on the approach to your home, your front light comes on, you walk towards the front door which unlocks for you, as you enter you ask the house to play some smooth jazz and it comes on, you then ask the house to dim the lights in the Livingroom and pop the tv on to the fireplace channel so that you can sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of wine before you head off to bed. Seems like the script from some futuristic film. But it’s all real in the here and now, somewhat pricey still, but getting cheaper all the time.

Things like Google assistant, Amazon Echo or even The Apple Homepod can all be used to control almost all of the wi-fi capable products in your home. It can be quite a difficult thing to get your head around and understand but once you get the ins and outs of the “Smart Home” even things that are considered “dumb” devices, such as lamps and older technology can be updated in to the future with the use of smart switches.

Where to start?
The best place to start would be with a smart speaker such as the Google Home or the Amazon Echo. Getting to understand one of these guys, you can start to get to grips with what the Hub of the smart home is. After that, lighting would be a great second step with the Philips Hue range of products you can automate pretty much every type of lighting in your entire house. Downlighting, outdoor lighting, lamps, led strips, pretty much everything that you can think of. The Philips products can get quite pricey but even having a smart switch connected to some of the lamps in your home can make it possible to turn on and off lights in your home with a voice command or app on your phone.

Where does it end?
That’s entirely up to you. There are products that can almost do everything you can think of. How far you want to take it is up to you. There is new technology being invented all the time and the longer it’s been around, the cheaper it will get so it’s definitely something that will become more common place as the years roll by.

The future of this technology is going to be very interesting, eventually we’ll see homes being built with all of this sort of tech as standard, every little thing will be automated, you’ll wake up in the morning a sensor will see your awake, turn on the lighting, your mirror will display the weather and news, you’ll walk out in to the kitchen, the lights will turn on and your coffee maker will pour you a coffee.  This sort of tech is going to go crazy in the next few years and it’s going to get cheaper by the day.  It’s an exciting time to be alive.
